Inert shielding gases are non-reactive or low-reactive gases. They are usually pure argon or helium and their mixtures. Gas shielded arc welding with inert gases is generally suitable for non-ferrous metals, especially aluminum. Active shielding gases are reactive gases, pure CO2 being the most common example. Argon can also be used, but it is usually mixed with CO2 or O2 (such as 25% CO2 and 75% argon). Gas shielded arc welding with active gases is particularly suitable for joining steel.
MIG and MAG processes are also known as gas shielded metal arc welding (GMAW). Here the welding wire acts as both the energy source and the filler metal. When it comes into contact with the base material during immersion welding, a short circuit is created, causing both the base material and the wire electrode to melt, and material transfer occurs. At this time, the welding wire is unwound from the wire reel and continuous feeding begins.
MAG welding is generally used for steel. Active shielding gas is used here, which is why we call it metal active gas welding (MAG). MIG welding is mainly used for aluminum and other non-ferrous metals. Inert shielding gas is used here, so it is called metal inert gas welding (MIG).
Whether it is MIG or MAG, it depends on the welding material.
