Storage method of sealed self-aligning roller bearings
 日期:2025/9/15 10:07:00

Sealed self-aligning roller bearings are widely used in high load, vibration, or axial displacement conditions due to their internal sealing structure and self-aligning performance. The correct storage method is crucial to ensure its stable performance and extend its service life. The following is a detailed preservation guide, covering environmental control, packaging protection, storage management, regular inspection, and operating procedures:

1. Environmental control: avoid extreme conditions

Temperature

Suitable range: 5 ℃~30 ℃, avoid severe temperature fluctuations (daily temperature difference ≤ 5 ℃). Extreme risks: High temperatures (>40 ℃) can accelerate the oxidation and deterioration of lubricating grease, while low temperatures (<0 ℃) may cause the grease to solidify or the sealing ring to harden, affecting the flexibility of the bearing.

Case: A wind power enterprise experienced early wear and tear after installation due to the failure of bearing grease caused by high summer temperatures in the warehouse.

.

Humidity

Control standard: Relative humidity ≤ 60%, to avoid the formation of condensation water.

. Moisture prevention measures: In humid areas or during the rainy season, dehumidifiers or desiccants (such as silicone) can be placed in the warehouse and replaced regularly.

Risk: Excessive humidity can cause rusting of bearings, especially unsealed self-aligning roller bearings (even if they are sealed, long-term high humidity may still penetrate).

.

Cleanliness

Environmental requirements: No corrosive gases (such as chlorine, sulfides), dust, or chemicals (such as acids, bases).

.

Protective measures: Dust proof flooring should be installed on the warehouse floor, and the goods storage area should be kept away from ventilation openings or doors and windows to prevent external pollutants from entering.

.

2. Packaging protection: isolate external pollution

Original packaging retained

Sealed self-aligning roller bearings are usually packaged in three layers: rust proof oil, plastic film, and paper/wooden boxes. Do not open before use.

.

Case: A certain machinery factory opened the packaging in advance, resulting in dust contamination of the bearings during storage and excessive noise after installation.

.

Secondary protection measures

If the original packaging is damaged, it needs to be repackaged:

Clean the dust on the surface of the bearing and apply a thin layer of anti rust oil (such as mineral oil-based anti rust oil).

. Wrap tightly with polyethylene film and add a moisture-proof cardboard box or plastic bucket on the outer layer. In scenarios with high sealing requirements (such as marine environments), nitrogen or dry air can be filled and sealed.

Selection of rust proof oil

Short term storage (<6 months): Use regular rust proof oil.

. Long term storage (>6 months): Use long-lasting rust proof oil (such as synthetic hydrocarbon rust proof oil) and regularly replenish it.

III. Storage Management: Standardized Stacking and Labeling

Stacking Method

Horizontal Placement: Bearings are placed flat on pallets or shelves to avoid vertical stacking that may cause roller deformation or sealing ring compression.

.

Layer limit: the height of a single pile is ≤ 1.5m, and soft materials (such as foam board) are padded between layers to prevent collision.

Distance requirement: The bearing should be kept at a distance of ≥ 30cm from the wall and other goods for ventilation and inspection.

.

Label Management

Each packaging box is labeled with the bearing model, specifications, quantity, production date, and storage date.

.

Use color labels to distinguish storage time (e.g. green:<6 months; Yellow: 6-12 months; Red:>12 months), priority should be given to using bearings that have been stored first.

First in, first out (FIFO) principle

Establish an inventory ledger to record bearing inbound and outbound information, in order to avoid long-term backlog and performance degradation.

.

Fourth, Regular Inspection: Prevent Potential Problems

Inspection Cycle

Short term Storage (<3 months): Check once a month.

. Long term storage (3-12 months): Check every 2 weeks. Extreme environments (such as high humidity and high temperature): Shorten the inspection interval to once a week.

Inspection content

Appearance: whether the packaging is damaged, whether there is rust or oil on the surface of the bearing.

.

Sealing: Shake the packaging gently to see if there is any abnormal noise (possibly seal ring detachment), or use a pressure tester to test the sealing.

.

Lubricating grease status: Open the small sample and check whether the lubricating grease is dry, discolored, or layered (such as turning black or precipitating oil).

. Problem Handling: If rust is found, use a white cloth dipped in kerosene to wipe it off, reapply anti rust oil, and package it. Lubricating grease deterioration: Contact the supplier to replace the bearings or supplement with specialized lubricating grease (such as high-temperature or low-noise types).

Damaged sealing ring: requires professional repair or disposal, do not disassemble by yourself.

.

Fifth, Operation Specification: Avoid human damage

Handling Requirements

Use specialized tools (such as hooks, soft ropes) for handling, and avoid direct dragging or throwing.

. Handle with care to prevent damage to the sealing ring or roller displacement caused by collision between the bearing and hard objects.

Preparation before installation

Bearings stored for more than 6 months should be cleaned and re lubricated before installation (even if not sealed, the performance of the lubricating grease may decrease due to seal penetration).

. After cleaning with cleaning agents (such as gasoline, trichloroethylene), blow dry with compressed air, and then apply new lubricating grease.

Taboo behavior

It is forbidden to directly strike the inner or outer ring of the bearing with a hammer.

. It is prohibited to expose bearings to open flames or high temperature environments (such as near welding operations).

It is prohibited to mix with chemicals such as acids and bases.

.

VI. Special Scenario Handling

Long term Idle Bearings

If the bearing needs to be stored for more than 1 year, it is recommended to rotate it 1/4 turn every 6 months to prevent the roller from sticking to the raceway.

. Rotate and reapply anti rust oil before packaging.

Protection during transportation

Transport vehicles must be equipped with shock absorbers (such as air cushions and springs) to avoid severe vibrations.

. Short distance transportation can be secured with wooden boxes or iron frames, while long-distance transportation is recommended to use containers filled with cushioning materials.

Unused after unpacking

If the bearing has been unpacked but not installed, it needs to be cleaned and coated with anti rust oil, wrapped in plastic film, and placed in a drying oven (temperature 20 ℃± 5 ℃, humidity ≤ 40%).

.

Summary

The storage of sealed self-aligning roller bearings should follow the principles of "dryness, cleanliness, shock resistance, and regular inspection". By controlling environmental conditions, standardizing packaging and protection, strengthening storage management, regular inspection and maintenance, and strict operating standards, the bearing life can be effectively extended to ensure its stable performance.

. Enterprises can develop standardized preservation processes based on their own conditions and train relevant personnel to implement them, in order to reduce equipment failure rates and maintenance costs.
