Precautions during the installation process of automotive wheel hub units
 日期:2025/10/31 9:39:00

The automotive wheel hub unit (wheel hub bearing unit) is the core component that connects the wheel and suspension system, and its installation quality directly affects driving safety, comfort, and service life. The following are key precautions during the installation process, covering pre installation preparation, operation specifications, and post inspection:

1. Pre installation preparation

Tool and material preparation

Special tools: torque wrench (accuracy ± 5%), bearing puller, jack, safety bracket, dial gauge, magnetic gauge seat, cleaning cloth, lubricating grease (such as lithium based or polyurea based grease).

Protective equipment: gloves, goggles, non slip shoes to avoid injury during operation.

. Spare parts inspection: Confirm that the new wheel hub unit model matches the vehicle, and check whether the sealing ring and ABS sensor (if any) are intact.

Vehicle and workstation preparation

Vehicle fixation: Park the vehicle on a flat surface, tighten the handbrake, and use a safety bracket to support the vehicle body (do not rely solely on a jack).

.

Disassemble old parts:

Remove the wheels, brake calipers (to be suspended to avoid damaging the brake lines), and brake discs.

. If the wheel hub unit and steering knuckle are integrated, the steering knuckle needs to be disassembled; If it is a split type, directly disassemble the old bearing.

Note: Mark the location of the old part (such as the direction of the ABS sensor harness) for easy installation of the new part.

.

Cleaning and Inspection

Cleaning Installation Surface: Thoroughly clean the steering knuckle, wheel hub mounting holes, and shaft neck with a cleaning agent (such as brake cleaner) to remove oil, rust, and metal shavings.

.

Check the mating surface:

Shaft neck: Measure the diameter with a micrometer to ensure no wear or ovality (deviation should be ≤ 0.02mm).

.

Installation hole: Check the inner diameter and perpendicularity. If the deviation is too large, repair or replace the steering joint.

. Sealing surface: Ensure that there are no scratches or burrs, otherwise it may cause oil leakage or water ingress.

2. Precautions during installation

Lubrication treatment

Bearing lubrication: Apply lubricating grease evenly on the inner and outer raceway and rolling element surfaces of the hub unit (filling about 1/3-1/2 of the space) to avoid excessive heat.

. Neck lubrication: Apply a thin layer of lubricating grease on the surface of the neck to reduce installation resistance and prevent corrosion. Sealing ring lubrication: If the sealing ring needs to be replaced, apply special lubricating grease (such as silicone grease) to its lip to ensure the sealing effect.

Installation method

Hot fitting method (suitable for interference fit):

Heat the wheel hub unit to 80-100 ℃ (oil bath or induction heater can be used), quickly insert it into the shaft neck, and lightly tap the outer ring end face with a copper hammer to make it in place.

. Attention: The heating temperature should not exceed 120 ℃ to avoid bearing annealing; Check for looseness after cooling.

Press in method (recommended):

Use a dedicated press sleeve and hydraulic press to evenly press the wheel hub unit into the steering knuckle mounting hole, with the pressure direction perpendicular to the axis.

.

Prohibit: Directly tapping the inner or outer ring of the bearing to prevent deformation or damage to the raceway.

.

Torque Control

Axle Nut Torque:

Tighten the axle nut in stages (such as manually pre tightening first, then using a torque wrench to reach the specified value in 2-3 steps).

. Typical torque values: The front wheel hub unit of a passenger car is about 180-250N · m, and the rear wheel hub unit is about 150-200N · m (refer to the vehicle maintenance manual for details).

Attention: After tightening, the nut should be locked at the required angle (such as 90 °) to prevent loosening. Brake caliper bolt torque: usually 80-120N · m, cross tightening is required to ensure uniform force distribution.

ABS sensor installation

If the wheel hub unit integrates an ABS sensor, it is necessary to ensure that the wiring harness plug is firmly connected without looseness or damage.

. After installation, use a diagnostic tool to clear the fault code and conduct a road test to verify whether the ABS function is normal.

III. Inspection and Debugging After Installation

Rotation Flexibility Check

Manually rotate the wheel and check if the wheel hub unit runs smoothly without jamming, abnormal noise, or axial movement.

. If there is resistance or noise, it may be due to excessive preload, installation deviation, or insufficient lubrication, and it needs to be readjusted.

Axial clearance measurement

Use a dial gauge to measure the axial clearance of the wheel (press the gauge head against the edge of the wheel hub and push the wheel forward and backward), and the clearance should be ≤ 0.1mm.

If the clearance is too large, it may be due to insufficient pre tightening force of the shaft head nut or bearing wear, and it needs to be re tightened or replaced.

.

Wheel hub runout detection

Reinstall the wheel and measure the radial runout and end face runout of the wheel hub with a dial gauge, with a deviation of ≤ 0.5mm.

Excessive runout can cause steering wheel shaking or tire eccentric wear, and it is necessary to check whether the wheel hub, bearings, or steering knuckles are deformed.

.

Road test verification

Test the braking performance at low speeds (5-10km/h) to ensure no drag or abnormal noise.

.

When driving at high speeds (60-80km/h), check if the steering wheel shakes and if the vehicle is moving smoothly.

.

IV. Common Problems and Preventive Measures

Early Damage to Bearings

Causes: Deformation caused by knocking during installation, insufficient lubrication, excessive pre tightening force, or corrosion caused by water ingress.

.

Prevention: Use specialized tools for installation, tighten strictly according to torque, and regularly check whether the sealing ring is intact.

.

ABS malfunction

Causes: broken sensor harness, damaged magnetic ring, or installation position deviation.

.

Prevention: During installation, avoid pulling the wiring harness and ensure that the gap between the sensor and the magnetic ring is even (usually 1-2mm).

Wheel shaking

Causes: excessive wheel hub runout, loose bearings, or poor tire dynamic balance.

.

Prevention: After installation, check the jumping value and perform dynamic balancing again (the error should be ≤ 5g).

Fifth, Safety and Environmental Protection Requirements

Safety Operation:

When using a jack to support a vehicle, it is prohibited to work under the vehicle.

; When using a hydraulic press, it is necessary to fix the workpiece to prevent it from flying out and injuring people.

Environmental treatment:

Waste lubricating grease and metal shavings need to be sorted and recycled to avoid polluting the environment.
